Who Is Indivisible?

Indivisible is a nationwide grassroots movement founded in 2016 to defend democracy and resist authoritarianism through strategic civic engagement. The organization began with a viral document, The Indivisible Guide, written by former congressional staffers who wanted to help ordinary people effectively pressure their elected officials. What started as a simple Google Doc has since evolved into a robust organizing network that spans every U.S. state.

The mission of Indivisible is to build a democracy that truly works “of, by, and for the people.” This includes countering far-right extremism, electing progressive leaders, dismantling corporate influence over politics, and defending civil and human rights. The organization is rooted in nonviolent action and emphasizes local empowerment, offering tools, trainings, and weekly national calls to keep activists informed and connected.

A significant strength of Indivisible is its decentralized structure. With nearly 2,000 active chapters nationwide, the movement is driven by volunteers who organize protests, town halls, phone banks, and voter outreach in their communities. These local groups operate autonomously but are supported by a national staff that helps coordinate broader campaigns and provide digital infrastructure. In many states, Indivisible chapters also form statewide coalitions to amplify their collective impact.

Indivisible employs a diverse range of tactics, including lobbying members of Congress, organizing protest actions, and conducting voter contact programs such as texting and canvassing. The organization pushes for legislation that protects voting rights, defends civil liberties, and expands access to political participation. It also pressures Democratic officials to adopt bold stances on climate, justice, and equity—often holding them accountable alongside their opposition to far-right policies.
